I.M. A MEMOIR

By: Isaac Mizrahi
February 26, 2019

Isaac Mizrahi is sui generis: designer, cabaret singer, talk show host, a TV celebrity. Yet ever since he shot to fame in the late 1980s, the private Isaac Mizrahi has remained under wraps. Until now.

In I.M., Isaac Mizrahi offers a poignant, candid, and touching look back on his life so far. Growing up gay in a sheltered Syrian Jewish Orthodox family, Isaac had unique talents that ultimately drew him into fashion and later into celebrity circles that read like a who’s who of the twentieth and twenty-first centuries: Richard Avedon, Audrey Hepburn, Anna Wintour, Mikhail Baryshnikov, Meryl Streep, and Oprah Winfrey, to name only a few.

In his elegant memoir, Isaac delves into his lifelong battles with weight, insomnia, and depression. He tells what it was like to be an out gay man in a homophobic age and to witness the ravaging effects of the AIDS epidemic. Brimming with intimate details and inimitable wit, Isaac’s narrative reveals not just the glamour of his years, but the grit beneath the glitz. Rich with memorable stories from in and out of the spotlight, I.M. illuminates deep emotional truths. Order from your favorite retailer here:

PRAISE FOR I.M.

"Intimate and generous and 100 percent Isaac. What makes this book so incredibly deliciously good is Isaac's specificity...not just as material (pun intended) but beyond the fabric of clothing and into the fabric of life, the experiences, the nuances, the brilliance, and oddity of the times we're in."

"I.M. has everything! It's colorful, hysterical, touching, bold, and heartbreaking. It's about coming of age, creativity, being yourself, Jewish mothers, fashion, art, loss, and glamour. I loved it."
Andy Cohen
New York Times Bestselling Author of Superficial
"In this bracingly honest, courageously vulnerable, and often hilarious memoir, Isaac Mizrahi traces a life full of yearning, telling his story as generously as he's lived it. This is the narrative of how a fat and conflicted yeshiva boy became a great and glamorous designer, and it is both gossipy and insightful, both elegant and profound, a portrait of Mizrahi's enduring anxiety and prodigious brilliance."

Isaac Mizrahi: An Unruly History - Mid-Career Survey at the Jewish Museum, New York City

March 29, 2016

A landmark survey of the work of Isaac Mizrahi, a trailblazing and influential American fashion designer, artist, and entrepreneur.

Beginning with Isaac Mizrahi’s first fashion collection, which debuted to critical acclaim in 1986, and running though the present day, this stylish, lavishly illustrated book presents his signature couture collections. Mizrahi’s exuberant couture style is classic American, inventively reimagined. He pioneered the concept of “high/low” in fashion, and was the first high-end fashion designer to create an accessibly priced mass-market line. Mizrahi approached other complex issues through his designs, as well—mixing questions of beauty and taste with those of race, religion, class, and politics.

Although Mizrahi (b. 1961) is best known for his clothing, his work in theater, film, and television is also explored. The result is a spirited discourse on high versus low, modern glamour, and contemporary culture. Three essayists discuss Mizrahi’s place in fashion history, his close connection to contemporary art, and the performative nature of his designs. New photography brings Mizrahi’s fashions to life, and an interview with the artist offers an intimate perspective on his kaleidoscopic work in diverse media.

The Isaac Mizrahi Pictures: New York City 1989–1993: Photographs by Nick Waplington

From 1989 to 1993, New York fashion designer Isaac Mizrahi granted the British photographer Nick Waplington rare backstage access to photograph every detail of the designer’s fitting sessions in the weeks before his twice-yearly fashion shows.

Combining Waplington’s gritty vérité style with Mizrahi’s haute couture sensibilities, the resulting images offer a candid glimpse into the world of fashion when supermodels including Cindy Crawford, Christy Turlington and Naomi Campbell reigned supreme. At the same time, Waplington set out to document the wildly creative nightlife of the ’90s “club kid” culture in New York, juxtaposing his images of uptown style with downtown looks and taking pictures at some of the city’s most infamous clubs, such as the Pyramid Club and Save the Robots.

Artist and photographer Nick Waplington (born 1970) has published several monographs, including Living Room and The Wedding (Aperture), Safety in Numbers (Booth Clibborn), Truth or Consequences (Phaidon) and Alexander McQueen: Working Process (Damiani). He lives in London and New York.
